Our Process

Handmade Candles

Every part of the Jonathan Ward production process is executed by hand. Exemplary craftsmanship informs each element of the Jonathan Ward candle-making process. All candles are hand-poured in our London studio, and quality control is of the utmost importance. Excellence is our standard.

Organic

Our propriety wax blend is composed of organic coconut oil, vegetable wax, and foraged and discarded beeswax from the purest sources, and has been certified 100% organic by The Soil Association.

Our wax contains no preservatives, chemicals, whitening agents or smoothing agents - we believe in delivering complex fragrance in the purest way. The quality of our candle burn is exemplary.

Ethical

Each exclusive fragrance is designed in the UK by Jonathan Ward, and built using meticulously sourced ingredients from ethical producers. The fragrances are a complex blend of raw materials and high quality synthetics and each formula is blended by a team of European perfumers in London and Athens.

Precise

Every Jonathan Ward candle is carefully composed in our London studio with precision and absolute attention to detail. A double wick is used whenever possible to allow for maximum fragrance lift and a clean burn throughout the body of the candle. We never use glues or resins to adhere the wicks to the glass. Instead, we use an artisan technique of adherence, hand dipping each wick in wax and holding it in place. With no glue or silicon present, we ensure consistency through more than forty hours of burn time. The fragrance released in the final hours of the candle burn will be as pure as those enjoyed in the moments after first lighting.

Individual

Each of the Jonathan Ward candles has embedded in its packaging design an individual imprint of its own unique wick combination and oil percentage. The glasses that house our candles are produced by one of the world's finest glass production sites: 'Luigi Bormioli' in Parma, Italy. We chose these high-quality drinking glasses to house our candles not only for their beautiful aesthetics, but with the intention that after enjoying our candles, customers are able to fully up-cycle and re-use the glasses as homeware.

Artisan

Our distinctive boxes and labels with their rich, dark palette and Art Deco style, are designed by Jonathan and manufactured using GF Smith papers and pre-flooded eco ink, hand-printed on an original 1966 lithographic press by a UK firm. Whilst fully recyclable, some customers prefer to give our boxes a second life, and they make beautiful and useful containers on desks and dressing-tables.
