Compersion… “To take direct pleasure from the happiness of another, when it doesn’t in any way directly benefit yourself.”
I started this summer, coming back to life slowly with a new life in Glasgow, conquering demons that were long overdue and necessary in their demise. And without effort, as I walked the path into the sunlight of the spirit, came the gift that I didn’t know I ever needed. Helping others selflessly.
The journey of an artist and self-expression can be a self-serving endeavour. Solely focused on long periods, deep in the process of creation, can forge a rather myopic life perspective. I started to help and support others this summer and give back the gifts that I had been freely given, and it has been life-changing.
And as in many of my creations over the years, inspiration can come in different forms. Sometimes I like to delve into the historical archives and use history as the jumping off point. Sometimes, I like to look closely at individual ingredients and build the concept by molecularly finding newness and innovation. In the case of “Compersion”, it is a feeling that I am trying to bring into the olfactory realm. How to create a “feeling” using fragrance notes?
Starting with white woods and oak-moss, which I loved as a child, in texture and fragrance, adding Ambergris and fresh citrus accords (grapefruit rind) and sensual tonka. The key was to harmoniously blend the core notes and bring them to a gentle symphony. Using saffron, white vanilla, violet and rose, this blend finishes with the same kind of inexplicable enchantment as Kartushya. Unusual but addictive.

A Spring Summer melody of citrus vegetal. Torn tomoato-leaf, sage, verbena, white grapefruit and a finish of subtle peppery mint. This aroma truly uplifts and cleanses the air with its nuances of bright and bold notes. Most certainly not a wallflower aroma.
Spiced cognac, birchwood, and pine. Paid homage to soldier spirit.

A poetic journey from darkness to light. Oud, Amber, and Iris entangle in warm nostalgic sensuality.

Tabitha was inspired. She dreamed in the art of making clothes. One evening as she ascended into an almost hallucinogenic slumber, she dreamed of a dress like no other. A sweeping gown made entirely of flowers. Geranium, peony and violets seemed to merge vibrant cerise, bold oranges and poetic purples into a tecnicolour painting to don her slender frame. Ever the modernist, Tabitha’s penchant for originality was as alive in sleep as it was during her waking hours… She gave the dream her own vivid artistic frame. Pairing a beautiful amber leather cropped pant under the gown before her neck decorated in multiple strings of pearls woven with tiny golden jasmine buds. Her look was almost complete.
Peneloque™ boldy takes vibrant florals to a finished symphony in the classic Jonathan Ward way. Unexpected and so far away from predictable , this summer statement blends bold geranium, peony, rose, violet into sensual peppery jasmine. But how to make florals original ? I created a platform of amber, tobacco leaf and the tiniest hint of leather which balances to give each florald depth and a truly original composition.
“I haven’t created a new candle statement since Covid and very much felt it was time. As I looked at the collection as a whole, it needed something that danced a little outside the spice and wood categories. However and I stress, this isn’t a classic floral. It really explores that magical harmony that can be achieved when you strive for originality in a category that can feel ‘mumsy’ or mainstream.”
